Bristol City Council has introduced a totally renewable bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) Iveco library van to its fleet to distribute books between 27 libraries across the city.
Since the implementation of Bristol’s clean air zone (CAZ) November 2022, all vehicles that do not meet emission standards must pay up to £100 for vehicles that weigh more than 3.5 tonnes.
The city has thus turned its focus to reducing the emissions of its private fleet, with the bio-CNG bus capable of reducing emissions by up to 95%.
The library van is based on a seven-tonne Iveco Daily CNG van with twin rear wheels and utilises the Daily’s truck-based chassis, meaning large crates containing thousands of books can be loaded, reducing the number of journeys required.
Mike Cutts, business line director, full range, UK and Republic of Ireland, Iveco, said: “CNG vehicles are a great solution to dramatically reduce emissions, and a viable alternative available today.
“Bristol City Council’s new library van takes advantage of the Daily’s innate strength and CNG’s decarbonisation benefits.”
Achievements and innovations in alternatively fuelled transport will be celebrated at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
