BT Group has announced its electric vehicle (EV) charging point scheme to turn green street cabinets into chargepoints has been scrapped, with only one of the touted 60,000 installed.
The single charger installed was placed in an outdated green street cabinet in East Lothian, Scotland, for use by local residents, who were able to charge their EVs for free until May 31 as part of a pilot scheme.
BT has now scrapped the scheme, suggesting instead that it intends to focus on the Wi-Fi connectivity challenge surrounding EV’s.

The East Lothian charger will cease operations in February with the charger currently showing as “out of order” on EV chargepoint locator apps.
A Department for Transport spokesperson responded to BT’s decision and said: “Despite BT’s decision, [2024 was] a record-breaking year for EV infrastructure.
“This comes alongside £6bn of private investment in the pipeline by 2030, helping EV owners drive with the confidence that they will never be too far away from a chargepoint.”
Achievements and innovations in EV charging infrastructure will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 26 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
