The European Commission has selected 39 projects to receive nearly €422m in funding under the first cut-off deadline of the 2024-2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF).
The funding, part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), aims to support the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) and advance decarbonisation efforts.
The selected projects will facilitate the installation of approximately 2,500 electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles, 35 hydrogen refuelling stations, the electrification of ground handling services at eight airports, the decarbonisation of nine ports, and the establishment of two ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities.
Among the recipients, Milence, a joint venture of Daimler Truck, Traton, and Volvo Group, will receive €111m to establish 64 truck charging parks across multiple EU countries, including Austria, Belgium, Germany and Spain.
Additionally, E.ON Drive Infrastructure (EDIR) has secured €45m to deploy more than 1,000 recharging points across six European nations.

A portion of the funding is also directed toward hydrogen infrastructure, with Air Products set to receive €6.3m to build two large-scale hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany.
Similarly, HVR Energy will establish 20 hydrogen stations across Spain with EU support of €4.2m.
Brussels Airport will benefit from €7.2m in funding to electrify ground handling services, installing 328 charging points for support vehicles and other electrical infrastructure.
The AFIF initiative, with a total budget of €1bn for 2024-2025, remains open for additional applications. The next deadline for submissions is 11 June 2025.
Following approval from EU Member States on 4 February 2025, the European Commission will adopt the award decisions in the coming months, after which grant agreements will be finalised with successful applicants.
Achievements and innovations in alternative fuels will be celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
