Local authorities have been given £201 million for road maintenance and pothole repairs by the government.
The Department for Transport is also to find early stage research into new surface materials or pothole repair techniques such a 3D printing.
The Freight Transport Association has welcomed the move. Malcolm Bingham, head of road network management policy, said: “The road network has been subject to chronic underinvestment for several years and this funding is desperately needed.”
