Swedish e-scooter operator Voi has partnered with Klaxon Mobility to develop a shared micromobility solution for wheelchair users.
The solution will integrate Klaxon’s wheelchair-accessible electric handbike into Voi’s fleet of micromobility vehicles to expand accessible transportation options.
Klaxon Klick is an apparatus that attaches to manual wheelchairs and provides electric power for an added boost, enabling users to travel longer distances. It also provides additional flexibility assisting with travelling over varied terrain.
Klick can provide speeds of up to 15km/h (9mph) allowing users to keep up with traffic flow in protected cycle lanes.
Voi will help new Klaxon users affix a small hitch below the seat of their wheelchair before the first ride. Once installed, the device clicks into place for all subsequent rides.
Voi said it plans to work with city transportation officials and accessibility organisations to streamline the rental process and ensure its electric micromobility is available to all.
“More cities are recognising that streets built to support micromobility can also improve mobility access for wheelchair users and others who face mobility challenges,” said Fredrik Hjelm, CEO of Voi.
“The Klaxon Klick is a thoughtful addition to Voi’s fleet, since it can attach to any wheelchair, allowing wheelchair users to get around more easily, efficiently, and safely.”
The solution will be trialled in New York City initially, where it will be available to rent on an on-demand and monthly basis.
Monthly renters will have their own Klaxon at their disposal, while on-demand users will be able to find and rent one through the Voi app.
