Aberdeen City Council has submitted a planning application for a £15m urban park on Queen Street, aimed at revitalising the area and enhancing active travel connectivity between the city centre and the beach.
The proposed urban park is a key component of the council’s City Centre and Beach Masterplan, which seeks to transform Aberdeen’s public spaces and improve the overall urban environment.
By prioritising pedestrian and cycle movement, the development is designed to promote sustainable travel options and create a safer, more accessible route for active travel.
The park will feature a variety of amenities, including outdoor seating, informal performance spaces, a terraced garden, and a sensory garden, along with enhanced street greening to foster a greener urban landscape.

Each space within the park is designed to serve a range of environmental and social functions, with overarching themes of urban nature, community, heritage, and arts and culture.
A significant focus of the park’s design is the improvement of pedestrian and cycle links between the city centre and the beach, making active travel a more attractive option for residents and visitors alike.
The development is expected to encourage more people to walk or cycle, contributing to Aberdeen’s broader sustainability goals.

The planning application follows months of consultation with local organisations and stakeholders to ensure the park meets the needs of the community and aligns with the city’s long-term development objectives.
The proposed location for the park is across from the city’s former police headquarters building on Queen Street, with the future of the building itself still under review by the council.
In addition to enhancing active travel, the new urban park is anticipated to stimulate investment from surrounding private buildings and landowners, further supporting the regeneration of the area.
Achievements and innovations in active travel will be celebrated and highlighted at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
