Norfolk County Council and the Transport for Norwich partnership are asking for feedback on proposals to improve walking and cycling facilities in Norwich, following the launch of a public consultation.
The proposals would see new segregated cycle lanes installed on both sides of Ipswich Road, Norwich with a new zebra crossing and pedestrian priority footway over the junction with Cecil Road.
A new designated 20mph zone to improve safety for all users is also included in the plans, this would require some changes to parking arrangements in order to facilitate the new cycle lanes.
Martin Wilby, Norfolk County Council’s cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said: “Bearing in mind changes in people’s travel habits during the global pandemic, this is an opportune time to encourage more people to switch journeys to walking or cycling.
“Both have seen significant growth in recent years and research has shown this can improve health, cut traffic congestion, improve air quality, support the local economy and help combat climate change.
“We’ve already seen significant government investment in Norfolk to encourage this shift and rather than putting in temporary pop-up cycle lanes our focus is on delivering well-designed permanent infrastructure which strategically supports the development of local walking and cycling plans across the county.”
Residents can view the plans on the council’s website and comment via an online survey. The consultation is open until 05 September.
The council added all feedback received will be analysed and, where appropriate, the plans revised in response before reporting back to members of the Transport for Norwich Joint Committee to decide the way forward.
Funding for the final plans will be provided through the Department for Transport’s active travel fund.
