Leeds City Bikes is set to introduce a new fleet of upgraded electric bikes and expand its coverage across the city in a significant step forward for active travel.
From Tuesday 22 April, 265 next-generation BBE2 e-bikes will join the scheme, delivered by shared mobility operator Beryl in partnership with Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Some 10 new docking stations will also be installed, expanding access to areas including Roundhay and Oakwood.
The upgraded e-bikes offer enhanced ride quality with larger wheels, puncture-resistant tyres, and a longer range of up to 80km (50 miles).
Designed with inclusivity in mind, the bikes feature a low-step frame and adjustable seating to accommodate a wide range of riders. A new locking mechanism will differentiate them from the existing fleet.
Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s deputy leader, said: “With the newest e-bike providing a lighter and easier way to travel, my hope is it’ll encourage more people to choose sustainable and active transport for their journeys.”
The expansion builds on the success of the scheme, which has seen more than 120,000 journeys completed by over 22,000 users since its September 2023 launch.
The initiative supports Leeds’ ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Achievements and innovations in active travel will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
