A new opinion poll carried out by collaborative mobility charity CoMoUK has suggested that the majority of people in Scotland support car clubs and bike sharing schemes.
The Survation for Collaborative Mobility poll reported that 50% of Scots are in favour of shared transport models to help tackle climate change, while only 13% were opposed to the idea.
According to the poll, public support for rental bike schemes and car sharing initiatives was highest in urban areas such as Lothians (60%) and Glasgow (58%). It also found that private cars remain the most popular form of transport.
A third of respondents said they did not have a strong view on shared mobility to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As such, CoMoUK is now calling on the Scottish government to promote the benefits of such schemes.
Lorna Finlayson, Scotland director for CoMoUK, said: “This research shows that Scots want to see more action when it comes to promoting shared transport. That’s an opportunity for government and councils to promote these initiatives more and show people the benefits of them.
“The coronavirus pandemic has shaken up the way people move around their communities. This time should be used as a moment to recalibrate the current system, get people out of private cars, and find greener and more efficient ways for people to travel.”
CoMoUK has previously called on local authorities to introduce on-demand bus services for Scottish communities cut-off by reductions in local services.
