City of York Council has partnered with behaviour change technology company BetterPoints to reward residents for using active and sustainable transport modes.
From today [16 August] anyone walking, wheeling, cycling or getting the bus to travel around York can earn points, which are converted into online or High Street vouchers, charity donations and York Gift Cards.
Users download the Betterpoints app and enter the mode of transport or let the app automatically track their journeys.
Furthermore, the sustainable travel challenge will also see York users entered in regular prize draws for getting around sustainably.
Andy D’Agorne, deputy leader and executive member for transport, said: “Sometimes we all need a little encouragement when it comes to building healthy habits – the BetterPoints app offers residents and commuters just that! With reminders and rewards, we hope this app encourages residents to get around sustainably, rewarding those who regularly do.
“Active and sustainable transport is an excellent way to stay healthy, enjoy the city and improve our local air quality. With rewards like the York Gift Card, residents can also support our amazing local businesses whilst building healthy and sustainable habits.”
Initially, the BetterPoints scheme will run for a seven-month period, until March 2022. It will be promoted alongside all the councils active travel campaigns and initiatives, such as the York Walking Festival (18-26 September) and Walk to School Week to encourage residents to get around sustainably.
Paula Widdowson, executive member for climate change and environment, added:“As we look ahead to our carbon net-zero target for 2030, getting around sustainably is key to reducing carbon as transport continues to account for around 28% of city-wide emissions.
“We know that changing daily habits can be difficult, but with the BetterPoints app we want residents to feel encouraged, motivated and recognised for every sustainable journey they make – long or short. Small changes can make a big difference to our overall carbon emissions and help create a cleaner, greener city.”
