Ahead of next month’s CiTTi Awards 2024 ceremony, City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine is profiling each of this year’s shortlisted entries – starting with those nominated for the Aurora Insights AI and Data Analytics Award!
This category – brand-new for this year’s CiTTi Awards – celebrates groundbreaking applications of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing urban mobility, highlighting innovative uses of AI and big data to improve transportation efficiency, safety and sustainability,
Submissions had to demonstrate how AI-driven solutions facilitate smarter travel planning, traffic management, and predictive maintenance, leading to tangible improvements in urban transport systems.
Inevitably, the winning entry will showcase technology’s impact on optimising mobility, reducing congestion and enhancing the user experience in urban settings.

CurbCargo and Savills
CurbCargo and Savills are nominated for their stewardship of London’s Leadenhall Building, providing premier property management for the high-profile real estate, supporting occupiers and enhancing spaces. Partnering with CurbCargo, Savills uses Software-as-a-Service technology to streamline loading bay congestion, foster collaboration, reduce urban freight and cut emissions, improving air quality city-wide. The initiative reduces urban freight, lowers Scope 3 emissions and advances sustainable practices.DPD UK
Parcel delivery company DPD UK is nominated for its commitment to sustainability and progression toward net zero by 2040, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. Collaborating with robotics experts, DPD has deployed carbon-neutral autonomous delivery robots nationwide, reducing traffic. These AI innovations exemplify DPD’s pioneering role in climate-conscious parcel delivery.Greenplan and EPG
Greenplan and EPG are nominated for their use of advanced routing optimisation technology to reduce transport costs by 10-30% and CO2 emissions by 10-20%. Developed with the University of Bonn and DHL, Greenplan’s dynamic algorithm adjusts to traffic, fleet data and demand. Clients can integrate modular tools, boosting efficiency and environmental impact.GXO
Third-party logistics provider GXO – in partnership with supermarket retailer Iceland – is nominated for its AI-driven route optimisation of Iceland’s distribution network. Conducted in collaboration with AI specialist Datasparq, the partnership has cut 900,000km of travel, saving 250,000 litres of diesel and reducing CO2 emissions by 720 tonnes annually. Moreover, the innovation has saved £750,000, with plans to expand it across Iceland’s network.Mobilityways with Prologis, Zeelo and Stagecoach
Mobilityways with Prologis, Zeelo and Stagecoach are nominated for the tackling of Scope 3 commuting emissions at various UK sites throughout the partnership. Focusing on sustainable transportation, these companies used data-driven insights to improve public transport and cycling safety for more than 10,000 commuters at Prologis’ DIRFT hub in Northamptonshire. Initiatives included collaboration with smart bus provider Zeelo and improvements in bus operator Stagecoach’s services, significantly reducing reliance on private vehicles. The project has enhanced accessibility, decreased CO2 emissions and is now being expanded, demonstrating a successful model of public-private collaboration in sustainable commuting solutions.Smart Transport Hub
Smart Lenz by Smart Transport Hub is nominated for its use of AI and VECC sensors to enhance urban mobility through real-time data analytics on cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles. With 94% accuracy and 24/7 monitoring, Smart Lenz aids councils in traffic planning, safety and sustainability. Deployed across several UK boroughs, it reduces congestion and promotes active travel.Transport for West Midlands & VivaCity
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and VivaCity are nominated for the launch of a UK-first initiative to enhance road safety using AI-powered sensors. By tracking multimodal traffic data and utilising VivaCity’s ‘Near Miss’ feature, TfWM can proactively address road hazards by analysing VRU interactions and identifying high-risk areas for effective, evidence-based interventions.
Acclaimed Irish stand-up comedian Andrew Ryan has been announced as the special guest host of CiTTi Awards 2024. He will reveal all the winners on Tuesday November 26 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in central London.
The ceremony will be attended by 200 of the UK’s leading transport professionals from local, regional and central government and other place stakeholders – including landowners, developers, and business improvement districts – and their project partners, such as architects, planners, contractors, and technology companies.
Guests will be greeted with a drinks reception held in the Balmoral Suite ahead of the winners being announced within the impressive surrounds of the Grand Hall, which features arched ornate ceilings, beautiful wood-panelling and dramatic chandeliers.
November’s trophy-giving ceremony and public announcement of the winners follows a thorough and exacting shortlisting and judging process, which saw more than 20 transport industry experts evaluate written entries and Zoom-based presentations from nearly 90 organisations across 20 categories.
