Ahead of this month’s CiTTi Awards 2024 ceremony, City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine is profiling each of this year’s finalists – continuing with those shortlisted for The Clean Air Initiative of the Year Award!
This award recognises outstanding efforts in reducing air pollution and GHG emissions in urban areas through innovative measures including, but not limited to, clean air zones, low emission zones and zero emission zones.
Entries highlighted a commitment to significant emission reductions, sustainability, and community engagement, offering scalable solutions that serve as models for others.
What’s more successful entries included citywide implementations, schemes in commercial districts, or innovative public transportation projects, detailing objectives, impact, and potential for replication, showcasing leadership in achieving cleaner, healthier cities.
This year’s finalists are:
City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council
City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is nominated for the Bradford Clean Air Zone (CAZ), launched on 26 September 2022. The CAZ is the UK’s second-largest road user charging scheme, addressing road transport emissions to improve air quality and public health. Aiming to meet legal nitrogen dioxide limits, cut over 200,000 tonnes of CO2e, and reduce health inequalities, the CAZ has already achieved Bradford’s lowest-ever pollution levels. Early health studies show fewer respiratory and cardiovascular issues, especially in deprived areas, with peer-reviewed findings due in 2024. The city now has the UK’s cleanest licensed taxi fleet, upgraded HGVs, compliant bus services, and expanded EV infrastructure with over 400 charging points. Over £30m in grants and exemptions have supported local businesses and residents, alongside reinvestment into projects like a Clean Air Schools Programme and e-bike schemes. Catalysing clean growth, the CAZ has spurred investments in hydrogen production, electric buses, and solar-powered EV infrastructure.Transport Scotland
Transport Scotland is nominated for the implementation of its Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, marking the most significant air quality initiative in Scotland since the removal of lead from petrol. These zones, introduced over the past 14 months, aim to reduce harmful pollutants like Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulate Matter, improving public health and supporting emission reduction targets. By restricting the most polluting vehicles from specific areas, LEZs have transformed Scotland’s four largest cities into cleaner, healthier environments. This innovative and collaborative programme not only enhances air quality but also promotes a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable transport system across Scotland.
