Ahead of this month’s CiTTi Awards 2024 ceremony, City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine is profiling each of this year’s finalists – continuing with those shortlisted for TThe EV Charging Infrastructure Award!
This award recognises innovative strategies and comprehensive solutions in EV charging infrastructure development, not only in installation but also in the integration of smart technologies, user experience improvement, and sustainability in EV charging networks.
Entries highlighted advancements in accessibility, scalability, and resilience of charging infrastructure, including the incorporation of renewable energy sources, battery storage solutions, and advanced network management systems to ensure reliability and efficiency.
This year’s finalists are:
3ti
3ti is nominated for the Papilio3, a rapidly deployable pop-up solar car park and EV charging hub. The project will integrate bi-directional DC charging and advanced power management aiming to address the challenges of renewable energy intermittency by positioning EV batteries as grid assets. Positioned as a modular ‘smart grid in-a-box,’ Papilio3 can accommodate up to 12 EVs and is deployable almost anywhere, enhancing EV charging accessibility and reducing grid load.Falco UK and Solarcycle UK
Falco UK and Solarcycle UK are nominated for the launch of the first 100% renewable solar e-bike charging stations within Falco’s cycle shelters, debuting at NHS Wales Ystradgynlais Community Hospital. This partnership provides quick-install, off-grid solar charging for e-bikes, supporting sustainable transport and environmental goals. Solarcycle’s innovative ‘solar-in-a-box’ solution offers easy, cost-effective green energy.InstaVolt
InstaVolt is nominated for the expansion of its network, the charge point operator installing 128 chargers at 44 sites across the UK in Q1 2024 alone. Highlights include the opening of a 14-charger superhub at Syon Park in West London in April, providing up to 160kW charging speed for commuters and locals, and breaking ground in June on the UK’s largest rapid-only superhub at Three Maids Hill, near Winchester, which will feature 44 bays, drive-through options. InstaVolt’s ambitious expansion, backed by 100% renewable energy sourcing, underscoring its commitment to advancing EV adoption and building a cleaner, more sustainable transport infrastructure.London Borough of Waltham Forest
London Borough of Waltham Forest is nominated for actively expanding its EV charging infrastructure in line with its Electric Vehicle Charging Point Strategy. This facilitated reaching a milestone of 1,000 charging sockets in Summer 2024 and targeting 2,500 within the next two years. As one of the first UK councils to declare a Climate Emergency in April 2019, Waltham Forest is committed to using EV infrastructure as a cornerstone of its Climate Action Plan, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.Q-Park UK
Q-Park UK is nominated for its expansion of its its EV charging network to meet rising demand, with a €40m (£33m) investment plan to install 5,000 EV charging points across seven countries, including 600 in the UK and Ireland. Prioritising sites with existing EV infrastructure for quicker ROI, Q-Park has addressed complex installation challenges, especially in underground facilities with limited connectivity and power, by implementing contactless payment terminals and upgrading power systems. Notable installations include 31 EV points at Q-Park Park Lane in London and 41 at Q-Park Deansgate North, Manchester’s largest urban charging hub.
