Ahead of this month’s CiTTi Awards 2024 ceremony, City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine is profiling each of this year’s finalists – continuing with those shortlisted for The Transport Inclusivity and Accessibility Award!
This award recognises exceptional contributions in the field of transportation education and advocacy.
Entries highlighted impactful public awareness campaigns, educational programmes, and advocacy efforts that promote sustainable urban mobility, influence policy changes, and foster a culture of smart transportation choices.
What’s more, submissions demonstrated the initiative’s reach, effectiveness in changing perceptions or behaviors, and contribution to the advancement of sustainable and efficient urban transportation systems.
This year’s finalists are:
London Borough of Camden with Fitzrovia Youth in Action & Sustrans
London Borough of Camden with Fitzrovia Youth in Action & Sustrans are nominated for improving transport through its Safe and Healthy Streets initiative, which encourages walking, cycling, and public transport. Camden aims to better engage with underrepresented groups, such as children and teenagers, who often do not participate in traditional consultations. To address this, Camden partnered with Sustrans for the Regent’s Park Area project, focusing on engaging local communities, including disabled people, children, teenagers, and Muslim women. While the initial engagement was successful, the council recognised the need for more targeted outreach to 11-18-year-olds. In response, Camden collaborated with Fitzrovia Youth in Action to create the Young Urban Designers Programme.Metropolitan Police
Metropolitan Police is nominated for the Toolbox Talk initiative. Launched in 2022 by the Metropolitan Police’s Commercial Vehicle Unit (CVU), the initiative seeks to enhance safety by engaging with the logistics and haulage industry. The programme educates drivers on road risks, vulnerable road users, legislative changes, and offers post-incident support, including well-being advice and signposting. The initiative has been highly successful, reaching over 60,000 commercial vehicle operators across the country. Most notably, it has contributed to a 62% reduction in preventable road deaths involving commercial vehicles in London, with a 12% reduction nationwide, a trend that has been sustained since its launch.SoMoCo
SoMoCo is nominated for ‘A Nudge in the Right Direction’, a collaborative initiative, part-funded by the Road Safety Trust, aimed at testing the effectiveness of innovative pedestrian crossings designed to encourage safe crossing behavior among adults. The project, spanning two cities, involved a partnership between Merseyside Road Safety Partnership, Liverpool City Council, Safer Roads Humber, Hull City Council, behavioral science consultancy SoMoCo, and road safety experts Agilysis. This collaboration combined the expertise of multiple agencies, enabling detailed statistical analysis and behavioral insights that informed on-road interventions for testing. Research revealed that 22% of incidents occurred near pedestrian crossings, prompting the development of a behavioral intervention.
