With this year’sĀ CiTTi Awards just over a month away, its judges are reflecting on the winning formula needed to ensure success, with one judge praising entries that contain three key ingredients: innovation, impact and inclusion.
Emily Cherry is the chief executive of cycling charity Bikeability and, thanks to her 25 years in the children’s sector, largely at the NSPCC, has a vast wealth of experience running safeguarding services, policy and communications.
She is also strategic advisor to the United Nations Peace One Day campaign, peerātoāpeer mental health charity Trustee of My Black Dog, and chair of online safety education organisation Breck Foundation.
Cherry spoke to City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine to discuss what she thought laid at the heart of a successful entry and how entrants should showcase their projects’ talents to win at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which takes place at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in central London on 26 November 2024.
Why did you choose to be aĀ judgeĀ at the CiTTi Awards?
At Bikeability Trust we are keen to hear about best practice examples in pushing boundaries in transportation. The CiTTi Awards helps to showcase the best in transport planning and active travel to share with our team of instructors to help inspire them after the awards.

What is the biggest challenge facing those with responsibility for developing urban transport and traffic schemes in 2024?
Long-term funding and the political bravery to challenge the culture wars. Amazing schemes have faced real hostility from the minority. I’m excited about the change of tone in the new government, but worried about the public finances to fund what is needed.
What do look for in a winning entry?
Innovation, impact and inclusion!
