BlackBerry Limited and subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, Qualcomm Technologies, have announced plans to develop and produce automotive platforms for the next generation of connected vehicles as part of a strategic collaboration. The relationship will be non-exclusive.
Both companies have agreed to optimise Qualcomm Technologies’ hardware platforms with BlackBerry’s QNX software. This will then be used in telematics, virtual cockpit controllers (VCC), electronic control gateways, digital instrument clusters and infotainment systems.
BlackBerry and Qualcomm Technologies have also agreed to enhance BlackBerry over-the-air (OTA) software and BlackBerry Secure Credential Management (SCM) Services to be used with select Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ modems. This demonstrates BlackBerry and Qualcomm’s joint effort to provide high performance automotive platforms as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.
President of BlackBerry Technology Solution, Sandeep Chennakesh, said: “BlackBerry and Qualcomm Technologies have had a long-standing relationship for over a decade, collaborating on technologies that have revolutionized the way people live and work.” He also adds that this collaboration “elevates our relationship as we aim to accelerate the delivery of the next generation platforms that connected vehicles will rely upon.”
Senior vice president and general manager of automotive, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc Patrick Little elaborates further, noting that as “innovation in the automotive industry accelerates it becomes necessary for industry leaders to work together to deliver leading-edge technology platforms that help to make vehicles safer, more connected, and increasingly autonomous.”
