The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Rehabilitation and Pedestrian Plaza project in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida has been successfully completed.
Delivered by Kapsch TrafficCom in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the scheme aimed to modernise critical infrastructure while enhancing community spaces above the tunnel.
Works included a full upgrade of the three-mile tunnel’s SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which now integrates multiple safety and traffic management technologies.
According to Kapsch, the system provides real-time data, automated alerts and remote operational control, helping authorities to respond swiftly to incidents and improve vehicle flow through the tunnel and surrounding road network.

In addition to technological upgrades, the project included resurfacing SR 5/US-1, installing intelligent transport systems and extending the tunnel top to accommodate a pedestrian plaza.
The new plaza features fountains, seating areas, redesigned brick pavers, artificial turf and landscaping.
Kapsch TrafficCom North America president JB Kendrick described the scheme as “a shining example of how we can blend safety, mobility, efficiency and community enhancement”.
The Fort Lauderdale project adds to Kapsch’s portfolio in the region, where the company supports more than 650 million vehicle crossings annually.
