The Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) has signed an agreement with the World Bank for the provision of consultancy services. The move represents the first serious step towards the introduction of electronic road pricing across the country. The World Bank will conduct an analysis into the various possible variants and present its findings to the RIA by the end of 2015. According to the agreement, the World Bank will develop an overall vision for the introduction of an electronic system. The vision will include a detailed working plan for the electronic collection of tolls, a report on the various potential systems and a clear business model. Miroslav Cenov of the RIA noted that the existing system of vignettes was insufficient for the qualitative maintenance and repairs of the national road network.
