Purpose-built all-electric refuse collection vehicles (eRCVs) are to be used in Nottingham from the end of this year.
The eRCVs are the latest service vehicles to be added to Nottingham City Council’s fleet, following the integration of electric street sweepers, cage tippers, and school minibuses.
According to the council, the eRCVs will be built in-house by the original vehicle manufacturer, with extensive testing, research processes and performance checks carried out prior to the build process commencing.
Nottingham City Council said it expects to keep the eRCVs for 10 years, compared to the current diesel RCV retention of seven years. The residual value of an eRCV is also expected to be much higher than its diesel counterpart.
The fuel savings for each vehicle will reportedly be about £10,000 per year, on top of maintenance costs saving an additional £6,000 per year. Furthermore, the two eRCVs should generate over £300,000 of savings over their lifetime.
