Travellers using First Bus and metrobus services in Bristol can now use the operator’s ‘tap-and-cap’ contactless payment method and Express Mode for Apple Pay.
The ‘tap-and-cap’ system enables First bus users to pay for their journey without having to ask or wait for a ticket.
They instead tap their contactless card or device on the ticket machine’s contactless card reader as they board the bus.
Using an online portal provided by Littlepay, passengers can see what they’ve spent using the paperless payment method.
According to First, the speedy ‘tap-and-cap’ transaction will create a faster flow of customers on to buses, helping people adhere to social distancing guidelines.
The other solution, Express Mode for Apple Pay, means customers with Apple Pay can now pay using their iPhone or Apple Watch without the need to wake or unlock their device, open an app or use Face ID or Touch ID.
For customers using Face ID on iPhone, Express Mode for Apple Pay has the additional advantage of allowing customers to keep their face covering on while boarding the bus.
The system has been rolled out in Bristol city centre with the support of the West of England Combined Authority.
West of England mayor, Tim Bowles, said: “Making bus travel affordable and easy to use is vital to ensure it is accessible for all of our communities.
“I’m thrilled to see more new technology making it even easier for people to leave their cars at home and provide choice and flexibility in how we get around.”
