Free bus travel for people under the age of 19 living in Scotland will be discussed as part of a consultation launched by the Scottish government.
The National Transport Strategy, which currently sees over a third of people able to use buses in Scotland for free, could be extended to include approximately 770,000 young people.
According to the Scottish government, the proposal aims to reduce transport inequalities and advance travel opportunities for under 19s.
Cabinet Secretary for transport, infrastructure and connectivity, Michael Matheson, said: “Free bus travel will help young people under the age of 19 to access education, employment and leisure, particularly those from lower income families.
“What we are proposing will help our young people as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, whilst supporting the vision outlined in our National Transport Strategy for a fairer and more sustainable transport system reducing inequalities, tackling poverty and promoting opportunity.”
Furthermore, a wider extension to the National Concessionary Travel Scheme would also see young carers benefit, with legislation put forward enabling free travel to companions of disable children under the age of five.
The consultation closes on Monday 07 December 2020.
