Stagecoach, in partnership with fleet solutions provider GreenRoad, has announced plans to become the first UK bus operator to deploy low bridge detection software across its nationwide fleet of more than 4,000 vehicles.
The £4m project is intended to improve existing safety protocols, reduce bridge strikes and build on Stagecoach’s adoption of GreenRoad’s driver safety and fuel efficiency system.
Carla Stockton-Jones, UK managing director of Stagecoach, said: “Everything we do starts with safety: for our customers, our people, pedestrians and other road users. Buses are already one of the safest forms of travel.
“But every year we invest millions of pounds in training our professional driving team and new technology to make our public transport operations even safer.”
Using an LED device on the dashboard, the GreenRoad system provides instant feedback to drivers about their movements to support safer and more fuel-efficient journeys.
The GreenRoad system will reportedly use GPS data and mapping services to provide advanced warnings about low bridges. If the technology senses the bus is headed for a collision or low-bridge route, it will produce an alert to encourage the driver to take an alternative route.
