Aurora, a US-based self-driving car company, has announced that it is to acquire Uber Technologies’ self-driving unit, Advanced Technologies Group (Uber ATG).
According to Aurora, the acquisition of ATG’s team and technology will accelerate the delivery of its first product safely, quickly, and broadly.
“With the addition of ATG, Aurora will have an incredibly strong team and technology, a clear path to several markets, and the resources to deliver,” said Chris Urmson, co-founder and CEO of Aurora.
“Simply put, Aurora will be the company best positioned to deliver the self-driving products necessary to make transportation and logistics safer, more accessible, and less expensive.”
In addition to acquiring ATG, Aurora also announced a strategic partnership with Uber that connects its autonomous driving technology to the ride-hailing platform. In support of the partnership, Uber is investing US$400m (£295m) in Aurora and Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, is joining Aurora’s board of directors.
