Location technology specialist TomTom has announced the launch of a solution designed to help carmakers decide which roads are safe for drivers to use a vehicle’s automated driving functions.
RoadCheck uses TomTom’s HD map data to curb automated driving in unsafe situations such as during adverse weather, in tunnels and through roadworks.
According to TomTom, the new product will enable vehicle manufactures to access its map data to define the operational design domain of their vehicles’ automated driving functions.
“By enabling carmakers to control where automated driving functions can be activated, TomTom is addressing a critical industry challenge that has been highlighted by our partners and customers,” said Willem Strijbosch, head of autonomous driving at TomTom.
TomTom RoadCheck will initially be used in a production model in the USA next year.
