Derby Arena, which is one of only six velodromes in the UK, is home to a new Cycle Hub featuring both an Olympic length indoor cycling track and facilities for outdoor rides.
The Cycle Hub will also host cycling accreditation programmes and bike maintenance workshops as it aims to provide on and off track opportunities for people across the East Midlands.
Cllr Ross McCristal, Derby City Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture, tourism and wellbeing, said: “The Cycle Hub at Derby Arena is a welcomed development for the wider local area and we are proud to be the key location in the East Midlands for cycling. It is an especially exciting time for cycling in Derby as we are currently hosting the British Cycling team as part of a seven-month residency.
“It’s inspiring to watch the elite cyclists, but overall, the Cycle Hub brings community spirit to Derby to unite new and existing cyclists to get involved. We would like to thank everyone for their hard work with the development of the Cycle Hub and we are excited to see new and returning riders make use of the facilities.”
The hub is open for or all ages and abilities. From balance bikes and first pedal classes for young children, women only track sessions, veterans’ sessions, track taster opportunities for beginners, family rides in the holidays and para cycling.
Additionally, the arena runs corporate team building opportunities which are suitable for everyone, regardless of ability. Coaches aim to cater a session to meet the needs of visiting teams.
Equipment can be hired when booking sessions online, as well as from the reception desk on the day. The arena also has helmets that can be used free of charge when hiring a bike, and riders can use their own bike on the track.
