The first 20 of 100 new cycle hangars coming to Brighton and Hove have been introduced across the city.
Each hangar is approximately the size of one car parking space and has capacity for six cycles, and can be customised to suit adapted cycles and cargo bikes.
Brighton & Hove City Council opened an online survey and selected locations based on public choice. Spots were chosen based on a scoring matrix that assessed current storage capacity, cycle usage and theft levels in the area.
Funding was allocated for buying, installing and maintaining the hangars early last year.
Steve Davis, councillor and co-chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “This really is a game-changer for a lot of people who want to cycle more but simply can’t because they don’t have the storage space.
“With so many people living in shared accommodation, flats or houses where storage space is at a premium, it can be difficult for many people to find space to safely store their bikes.
“We know that if we want more people to travel actively and sustainably, we have to give them the right infrastructure.
“Cycle hangars are a really good incentive for people to travel more by bike because it means they don’t have to have it sitting in their hallway or carry it up several flights of steps.”
Residents who live close to a given cycle hangar can apply for any available space. Spaces will cost approximately £1 per week, with the option to pay for spaces for three, six or 12 months at once.
For survey respondents, spaces were allocated by operator Falco on a first come, first served basis.
In the event there are no available spaces, residents will be put on a waiting list and informed when one becomes available.
