Leeds City Council is working to add 7km (4.3miles) to its existing cycling networking in the city centre, linking up and filling in gaps across the route.
Partnering with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the council said it aims to address key barriers including bridge crossings to encourage demand for cycling and increase the benefits of other schemes by improving connectivity across the cycle network.
Part of the wider Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme, the project comprises new cycling infrastructure in several Leeds city centre locations. It will connect routes on the city’s existing cycle network and increase the length of continuous cycling infrastructure.
According to the council, the new infrastructure will create a step change in travel across the region, making active travel options, such as cycling, safer and more appealing for people. It said this is essential to reducing reliance on car travel and meeting the Leeds commitment to become a net zero carbon city region by 2038.
The council is looking to engage with residents on the project and launched a public consultation. People can complete an online survey on the combined authority’s website until 19 February.
