Edinburgh has become the most bike-friendly city in the UK, according to research by Leisure Lake Bikes using data from shared cycling routes platform Bikemap.
The Scottish capital edged ahead of London as figured revealed 1,751 cycling routes compared to 1,730 in the UK’s capital. And with a range of bike priority measures, Edinburgh is shaping up to be the best and safest city in the UK for cycling, according to the report.
Riders in London did cover more miles on bikes however, combining both commuting and leisure activities to clock up 223,429km (138,832miles).
Bristol came third on the list, thanks to its 15-mile-long cycle route The Bristol and Bath Railway Path, with Glasgow and York sitting fourth and fifth on the table.
The report stated: “Cycling is one of the UK’s most popular sporting activities, and its growth in the past year has been exciting. The cycling community is welcoming this upsurge in pedal power, encouraging people to keep up this sustainable and healthy transport method.
“As the popularity of cycling increases, the need for cycle routes and infrastructure grows — especially in our cities. More safe passages and cycle paths can help to encourage cycling for all, from the fitness fanatics on mountain bikes to the business commuters on electric bikes.”
