Construction of a new cycle scheme in Derby has begun, providing a continuous off-road route between the city centre, Wyvern retail park and Pride Park stadium.
Funding of £500,000 allows phase one of work to begin transforming a grass verge into the cycle path and installing new street lighting.
The route furthers the city’s aim of improving cycling and public transport links, with new park and ride hubs and an electric rapid transit route also launched in the city centre.
The programme is part of a joint bid with Nottingham City Council to the UK Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund, which saw over £161m awarded to both cities.
Councillor Matthew Holmes, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transportation, Derby City Council, said: “A key part of our successful bid was the expansion of sustainable travel options, and I am delighted that work is starting on extending our network of cycle lanes, and improving the environment to further encourage more people to stay active and cycle and walk around out city.”
The work is expected to take 10 weeks to complete, with phase two of the scheme to follow later in the year.
