The Department for Transport has proposed new measures in its Inclusive Transport Strategy, backed by up to £300 of funding, to ensure that all disabled people can travel confidently and easily.
The strategy will see extra investment in rail accessibility infrastructure and the Access for All programme to make railway stations more accessible, such as step-free access.
Funding for Changing Places accessible toilets at motorway service stations will be provided as well and league tables which highlight operators that are delivering the best service for disabled people are to be introduced.
“This Inclusive Transport Strategy is the first step in achieving a genuinely inclusive transport network, which meets the needs of all people, regardless of whether they are disabled or not,” said transport accessibility minister Nusrat Ghani.
“Government acknowledges there is a lot of work to do to make the transport system fully accessible by 2030,” he continues, and “we are committed to working at pace on those areas where we can make an immediate and important difference, such as training and assistance.”
