The poor performance of Northern rail services has taken up top priority on the Department for Transport’s agenda.
The government is to modernise of the rail network to improve services for passengers across the country with the timetable recovery plan, which will tackle disruption to services.
“We are delivering the most comprehensive and significant modernisation of the national rail network since the Victorian era,” said transport secretary Chris Grayling
The government aims to improve driver rostering to get more trains running, increase driver training on new routes, add additional contingency drivers and management presence at key locations in Manchester.
Extra peak services will also be introduced in the timetable along the Bolton corridor, including between Buckshaw and Manchester Victoria, and Preston and Manchester Oxford Road.
“We are working closely with train companies to drive down cancellations, and will support Network Rail and the wider industry in delivering these significant improvements,” said rail minister Jo Johnson.
