Alexander Dennis and BYD have launched a shorter version of their co-developed electric double-decker bus for increased manoeuvrability on congested city roads and improved navigation of tight corners.
The partnership, which launched the zero-emission Enviro400EV in 2019, has shortened the vehicle wheelbase by 50cm, resulting in a 10.3m option designed to benefit operators of inner-city bus routes.
BYD’s dedicated R&D team in the UK has been credited for the development of the new chassis, which has been designed to meet the UK government’s requirement to bring bespoke zero-emissions transport to the nation’s towns and cities.

Frank Thorpe, managing director at BYD UK, said: “This latest double-deck model demonstrates our ability to develop vehicles that meet demands of more and more operators wishing to transition to electrification.
“The new 10.3m model offers a no-compromise specification for public transport operators with high passenger volumes on congested and restricted route profiles.
“Above all, the BYD ADL Enviro400EV provides passengers with a very safe, quiet, comfortable and emissions-free public transport solution.”
The BYD team worked in collaboration with ADL’s body engineers to ensure that the battery placement provided optimum weight distribution and ample power.
Paul Davies, ADL managing director, said: “The new, short-wheelbase option for our electric double-decker further ensures operators can rely on us to deliver the buses they need, tailored to their requirements and backed up with best-in-class aftermarket support.”
A demonstrator will be available for operators to trial this summer.
