US start-up Aptera Motors has developed a solar-powered EV that requires no charging for most daily use journeys.
According to the company, the solar EV has a range of up to 1,000 miles per full charge by taking advantage of lightweight structures and low-drag aerodynamics. Furthermore, its cooling material science and manufacturing processes are designed to increase vehicle efficiency.
Some 180 solar cells are designed into the body of the vehicle with liquid-cooled electric motors to propel it from 0-60mph in as fast as 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 110mph.
The start-up has also developed a user interface to keep drivers updated with ways to conserve energy and extend range in real time.
Chris Anthony, co-founder, Aptera, said: “With Aptera’s never-charge technology, you are driven by the power of the sun. Our built-in solar array keeps your battery pack topped off and anywhere you want to go, you just go.”
The first vehicles are expected to be produced in 2021 with Aptera accepting pre-orders now.
