Gas supplier Calor is using Daimler Trucks’ Fuso eCanter light-duty all-electric truck to deliver bottled butane and propane to customers in central London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
A single charge gives the zero-emission eCanter an operating range of approximately 100km (62 miles), to help reduce the environmental impact of urban delivery operations.
Calor’s vehicle typically covers around 50km (31 miles) a day, and its batteries are replenished overnight at a charging point in the depot.
According to Daimler, typically, the 7.5-tonne vehicle leaves the depot each morning carrying a 2,370kg load, and remains heavily laden throughout the day, as the driver collects empty gas bottles each time he drops off full ones.
One of those drivers, Alexandru Nechita, said: “The truck’s size and manoeuvrability mean it’s easy to negotiate city-centre traffic or access particularly tight locations.”
Some 16 Fuso eCanter from Daimler Trucks’ small series-production in Tramagal, Portugal, have been delivered to customers in the UK so far.
In the USA, Europe and Japan, more than 150 vehicles are operating in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen and Lisbon.
