City of York Council has announced that work on two of the region’s largest EV charging hubs has begun.
Construction on the HyperHub sites, located next to Monks Cross and Poppleton Bar park and rides, started earlier this month following a ÂŁ2.2m investment from the council.
The site will be developed, In partnership with Evo Energy, into high-Speed EV charging hubs consisting of solar PV canopies (100kWp) with battery energy storage (348kW/507kWH).
The council said this will enable it to maintain a lower tariff than commercial operators can offer.
In addition to generating low-carbon electricity on site through PV arrays, all electricity supplied from the national grid will be generated by renewable sources.
Furthermore, there will be four rapid (50kW) and four ultra-rapid (150kW) EV chargers to support the uptake of modern EVs, which have larger battery capacities and support higher charging speeds.
Andy D’Agorne, executive member for transport at City of York council, said: “The two HyperHubs will support the next generation of plug-in vehicles delivering high quality, high-speed electric vehicle charging hubs for residents and visitors.
“The project works alongside our electric vehicle charging strategy, which will provide a high quality charging network that meets the needs of residents, fleets, and through traffic.
“To guarantee the best result for residents, we plan to continue to own our charging network. This allows us to plan how the network will grow, set tariffs, makes us directly accountable and enables us to deliver next generation chargers as quickly as possible.”
The hubs are due to be completed by June.
