Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has partnered with intelligent energy platform Kaluza to develop a new EV smart charging solution.
The partnership has selected the UK as the testbed for its direct-to-car smart charging solution for all new Fiat 500 EVs.
The direct-to-car technology will harness live data from local grid operators to control the car charging to times when carbon intensity is lowest and energy cheapest.
Kaluza’s AI platform has been designed to intelligently manage the charging of thousands of EVs, including via vehicle-to-grid devices, to support grid balancing.
The technology being trialled does not require a separate smart charging point, which, according to Kaluza, enables drivers to benefit from cheaper, simpler and more sustainable EV charging services.
FCA will trial the smart charging service with a select a group of Fiat 500 EV customers in the UK during the first half of 2021. Once rolled out, the service will reportedly enable drivers to benefit from reduced bills, lower carbon emissions and an in-app charging system.
Sara Wood, CEO at Kaluza, said: “Collaboration between the transport and energy sectors will be crucial for the UK to reach net-zero emissions.
“We are excited to be working with FCA, a company that combines a unique automotive history with an ambitious vision for the future of e-mobility.
“Together, we are putting a truly innovative technology in the hands of drivers, allowing them to unlock the full value of their electric vehicle and become active participants in a decarbonised energy future.”
