Location data company Here Technologies has released a new interactive map detailing EV charging stations across Europe.
According to the company, the map highlights how far the UK is from the required infrastructure to meet the mass adoption of EVs.
Based on Here’s EV charge point data, the map shows London stands well ahead of other European cities, with more than ten times the amount of Rome and Madrid. But with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) estimating 2.3 million charging points needed to meet the 2030 deadline, Here said the map, which can be seen below, shines a light on the current situation. It indicates that there is clearly work to be done.
Commenting on the map findings, Cyril Leman, senior manager of auto at Here, said: “The UK currently leads the way in electric vehicle charging stations in Europe, but there’s still a way to go to build the infrastructure required for the ban on petrol and diesel cars in 2030.
“London is setting an example for the rest of the UK, and while it has around 6,000 EV charging stations, many of which feature multiple charge points, the SMMT numbers show that there needs to be rapid growth on top of this.
“The Ultra Low Emission Zone programme will likely have played a part in London’s figures, as electric vehicles are exempt from paying congestion charges, prompting an uptick in EV sales in the capital. Hopefully we could see other areas following London’s lead to spur adoption of EVs and drive UK cities toward a sustainable future.”
