Five UK-built plug-in hybrid range-extender electric taxis have been put into operation in a city in Germany as part of a new on-demand mobility service.
The TX vehicles, developed by London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), were chosen by public transport firm STOAG Stadtwerke Oberhausen for its new Revierflitzer service in the city of Oberhausen.
The taxis are intended to supplement the existing bus and tram network in Oberhausen in the evening and at night when public transport is less frequent.
Initially, the TXs, whose design is based on the iconic London black cab, will operate in the northern part of Oberhausen between 9pm and 2am on weekdays, up to 6am on Saturdays and 9am on Sundays.
Denis Osmann, deputy chairman of the supervisory board of STOAG, said: “The London taxis are legendary, the driving experience is something special.
“That’s why I think the people of Oberhausen are curious and will gladly use the new service.”
LEVC’s eCity technology combines an emission-free, all-electric range of 103km with an electrically operated total range of 485km.
The TX model is also suitable for operation during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
Not only does it feature a glass partition between the driver and passenger compartment but only three of the six available seats in the passenger compartment can be booked in order to maintain social distancing.
Jörg Hofmann, CEO of LEVC, said: “It’s great to see Oberhausen using the TX for its new on-demand mobility service.
“The iconic ‘London Taxi’ has been transformed into a purpose-built electric model that offers passengers high-quality, safe and environmentally friendly transport services.
“Thanks to these benefits, we see a growing demand for the TX in cities across Europe.”
