Nissan are expected to announce the creation of a gigafactory in Sunderland, which could produce 200,000 EV batteries annually.
According to reports by Sky News, the Japanese car manufacturer may disclose plans for construction of a UK gigafactory as early as this week. The site is expected to open by 2024 and would produce 6Gwh of battery capacity a year.
In a statement, a Nissan spokesperson said: “Having established EV and battery production in the UK in 2013 for the Nissan LEAF, our Sunderland plant has played a pioneering role in developing the electric vehicle market.
“As previously announced, we will continue to electrify our line-up as part of our global journey towards carbon neutrality, however we have no further plans to announce at this time.”
The prospect of a Nissan plant builds on plans, first revealed last year, for a BritishVolt gigaplant at Blyth in Northumberland.
And as previously reported by CiTTi, there are proposals for a gigafactory built at Coventry Airport with Coventry City Council currently looking for the views of residents and the local community on the project.
