Research from price comparison website Moneysupermarket has revealed the UK towns and cities with the highest number of insurance enquiries for electric vehicles (EVs).
The place with the most enquiries per 100,000 people was Reading (2,016) . This figure was 8% more than Guildford (1,866), which took second place.
The other places to make the top five were Stevenage, Watford and Chelmsford.
According to the study, EVs were the least popular in Sunderland, with only 101 enquiries per 100,000 people during the past year.
MoneySuperMarket also examined typical professions across EV drivers, with 10.2% of enquiries reportedly coming from retirees, with NHS workers placing second and counting for just over half this number at 5.9%.
Sara Newell, van and motor insurance lead at Moneysupermarket, said: “It’s great to see electric car ownership on the rise as more people make the change from petrol or diesel cars.
“Electric cars and vans have often been more expensive to insure than petrol or diesel vehicles because of the cost and availability of spare parts, and the common need for specialist repair works.
“But as more electric vehicles come onto the market, and with the government’s 2030 impending ban on new petrol and diesel cars, the cost of insurance is falling.
“If you’re making the change to an electric car, make sure you use a price comparison tool, like Moneysupermarket, to get the best deal on insurance.”
According to Moneysupermarket, during the past twelve months 80% of all enquiries were for EVs worth more than £20,000, while just 6.4% were for vehicles costing between £5,000 and £14,999. This places the majority of EVs in the highest value band for motor insurance.
