Shropshire Council has secured funding from the UK Department of Energy, Business and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for a smart EV charging point project being led by the Agile Streets consortium.
According to Agile Streets, the project will provide on-street charging in residential areas throughout Shropshire for EV drivers who do not have driveways. Shropshire Council is currently working to identify the most suitable locations.
Smart charging will be available during off-peak hours, when energy prices are typically lower.
The project follows the installation of two new EV charging points in March, which have reportedly charged 187 vehicles and saved over 2.5 tonnes of carbon.
Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, public health and climate change, said: “As the move to a low-carbon economy accelerates, we must ensure that we have the infrastructure in place to support it, and this includes EV charging.
“As electric vehicles become more affordable and more people consider making the switch, it is crucial that we give them the confidence and knowledge to do so, and this project is an important step forward in supporting zero emission travel.”
Shropshire Council said it will continue to further expand the EV charging network across the region.
