Following a successful pilot in the UK between Uber and Nissan, Renault has joined the partnership to provide Uber’s partner drivers with affordable EVs for use across European cities.
The UK trial will be extended into France by then end of 2020 before scaling up the programme to cover seven capitals across Europe including Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid and Paris.
The initiative is part of Uber’s goal to ensure that by 2025 half of the kilometres driven across these European cities are done so in a zero-emission vehicle.
The electric cars available as part of the scheme will include the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe as well as any new EV produced by the car manufacturers.
Test drives will be available for partner drivers on the Uber app as part of a wider joint marketing and education plan to demonstrate the benefits of electric vehicles.
Jordi Vila, divisional vice president for sales and marketing at Nissan Europe, said: “From 10 years of experience with the Nissan Leaf, we know people love driving electric, and that making the switch can help drivers to save money and support the clean air ambitions of our major cities.
“By teaming up with Uber in the UK, we have already been able to increase the awareness and adoption of zero-emission vehicles, and we are looking forward to exploring how to roll that out further in Europe.”
