Kent-based international relocation specialist, Matthew James Global Relocations, has introduced the UK’s first Scania hybrid removal vehicle into its fleet.
The truck, which will operate principally within the Greater London area, has been built to a specification that achieves a three-star rating under Transport for London’s Direct Vision Scheme.
“In addition to low noise and low emissions, the hybrid is a particularly economical option for use in London, where our vehicles are often stationary for significant periods of time, due to the sheer volume of traffic,” said Matthew De-Machen, managing director of Matthew James Global Relocations.
The vehicle is based on a Scania P 320 6×2*4 rigid chassis, featuring a steering rear-axle.
Its 320hp/1,600Nm torque, nine-litre internal combustion engine is supported by an electric motor – that delivers 177hp (130kW) and 1,050Nm of torque – powered by a powered by 7.4kW of lithium-ion batteries.
Using only electrical power, the 27ft-long truck has a range of 10km, based on a 15-tonne load on flat roads, making it suitable for operation in city centres.
The vehicles can be driven in a all-electric mode due to the addition of an electric compressor for the braking system and an updated electric power steering system.
The driver can monitor the battery’s state of charge via the instrument cluster.
Energy can be recovered to the batteries via regenerative braking, however if the braking demands are greater, the service and exhaust brakes will support in the normal manner.
