EV charging app Zap-Map has released new mid-year figures for chargepoint installations in 2022, which show a 40% growth in ultra-rapid chargers across the UK.
These numbers indicate, according to Zap-Map, that ultra-rapid outlet roll-out has kept pace with the number of EV drivers, which grew by 29% in the first half of 2022.
The data also shows that the total number of all charger types has increased by almost 15% in this period, from 28,458 to 32,663.
Of the 4,205 new devices installed this year, 49% were installed by just five networks: Ubitricity, Pod Point, InstaVolt, Char.gy and VendElectric.
Some 1,662 of these installations were ‘on-street’ chargers, which are designed to provide charging to private homes. This marks a near 19% increase in 2022.
The North East saw the biggest growth by region, with the number of chargers growing by 21% in the first six months of 2022, from 897 to 1,085.
Greater London saw the most installations, growing from 9,160 devices at the end of 2021 to 10,865 at the end of June, a more than 18% jump.
The East of England saw an 18% increase.
Melanie Shufflebotham, co-founder and COO at Zap-Map, said: “The 40% increase in the number of ultra-rapid chargers is clearly the headline figure so far in 2022.
“These types of chargers make longer journeys far easier, so the big increase should really mean we see an end to ‘range anxiety’.
“But let’s not forget that slower chargers also have a critical role to play.
“They might not provide the excitement of adding hundreds of miles in minutes – but with more than half a million pure-electric cars now on UK roads, their part to play in the adoption of electric cars is just as important as their ultra-rapid counterparts.
“It’s crucial that the rollout of high-speed charging hubs continues at pace, alongside the increasing provision of on-street chargers for those without driveways, ideally with local councils engaged along the way.”
Zap-Map attributes much of this growth to networks such as MFG EV Power, InstaVolt and Gridserve Electric Highway, which are rolling out hubs with multiple devices around the UK.
