Abertis Mobility Services (AMS) has partnered with Yunex Traffic to offer cities and public transportation agencies in Spain end-to-end solutions to implement low-emission zone (LEZ) projects.
The Climate Change Law within the Spain 2050: Foundations and Proposals for a Long-Term National Strategy – an ambitious plan aligned with community policies to drastically reduce emissions of greenhouse gases – requires all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to set up an environmental zone by 2023.
The introduction of LEZs will affect 150 Spanish localities with more than 24 million people, or 52% of the inhabitants of Spain.
Under the partnership, AMS will provide infrastructure operations and management experience and knowledge of regulation compliance. Yunex Traffic will leverage its ITS market expertise to deliver a LEZ enforcement system that covers both roadside equipment, such as cameras, and central IT SW system, offering predictive data on traffic and pollution to help city authorities implement air-quality strategies.
AMS CEO Christian Barrientos said: “According to the World Health Organisation, nine out of 10 people breathe highly polluted air each year. For this reason it is urgent to establish measures to reduce pollution within cities, as is the case of low-emission zones.
