Homeowners living near proposed clean air zones could make an additional income by renting our their driveways as parking spaces to drivers looking to avoid the daily charge.
According to YourParkingSpace.co.uk, some of the cities where clean air zones and zero emission zones will be introduced or are being considered are in rented driveway parking hotspots, with many residents reportedly already earning £1,000 per year on average by renting out their empty driveways during the day.
Harrison Woods, managing director of YourParkingSpace.co.uk, said: “Rented driveway parking near clean air zones, where cars will be affected, is a win-win situation.
“Homeowners could make an additional income and inner-city residents will breathe less harmful traffic fumes as more cars will be parked further away from the city or town centre, with commuters using public transport instead to continue their journeys.”
Last year, property owners near London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone registered their driveways in record numbers shortly after the introduction of the scheme aimed at high polluting vehicles.
Meanwhile, Birmingham will have one of the UK’s first clean air zones in 2020 and is high up for driveway earnings at £1,269 per year on average.
Other major cities where low-emission zones are under discussion include Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Cambridge, all of which are cities where residents earned more than £1,000 per year on average by renting their driveways.
And with more than 60 local authorities having reportedly considered, or considering, some form of new clean air measure, Harrison believes many parts of the UK could be affected over the next few years.
Harrison added: “Pre-booked parking, such as parking on a rented driveway, already has environmental benefits as it stops motorists circling around looking for an empty space, therefore reducing their vehicle emissions.”
