Paul Gadd, deputy director, land and maritime transport, materials and manufacturing at the UK’s innovation agency Innovate UK, has reiterated the findings from Innovate UK’s second edition of its Transport Vision 2050.
The Transport Vision 2050 is intended to inform strategy and investments and stimulate discussion in the transport industry.
Published August 2021, the first edition of Transport Vision 2050 identified how transport in the UK was changing and how this change could be expedited for the benefit of the nation.
The second edition sought to build on this, facilitating the digital solutions that are now commonplace across the UK’s transport networks, and examining how this change affects customer experience.

The three-year evaluation period saw Innovate UK conduct a desk review covering over 200 published strategies, forecasts and other documents that influence and predict the future of transport.
This was tested with more than 200 stakeholders, using their feedback to improve and refine this forecast.
The publication also suggests that the UK expedite the electrification of its private fleet, move towards increased hydrogen production and decarbonise commercial flights in line with its Jet Zero strategy–the framework and plan for achieving net zero aviation by 2050.

Innovate UK’s deputy director, land and maritime transport, materials and manufacturing, Paul Gadd, said: “Transport was responsible for a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. That isn’t something that can continue if we want to reach net zero.
“Those emissions are embedded in people’s lifestyles and the products businesses sell, and people and businesses want them reduced ideally to zero.
“In response, transport providers are reengineering their products to remove these emissions.
“This is one of the reasons we’ve published the transport vision. We want to prompt these discussions and listen to the feedback so that we can update and improve our view of the future.”
Achievements and innovations in emissions and sustainability will be celebrated at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Nominations are open now! Please visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector.
