Shell Nederland and Shell Overseas Investments, subsidiaries of Shell, have announced that they are preparing to commence building what’s claimed to be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant.
The companies hope the Holland Hydrogen I plant will be operational by 2025.
The 200MW electrolyser will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam and will produce up to 60,000kg of renewable hydrogen per day.
The renewable power for the electrolyser will come from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust, which is partially owned by Shell.
The HyTransPort pipeline will carry the hydrogen to Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, as a substitute for some of the grey hydrogen currently in use. This will contribute to the decarbonisation of some of the site’s energy production.
“Holland Hydrogen I demonstrates how new energy solutions can work together to meet society’s need for cleaner energy,” said Anna Mascolo, executive vice president of emerging energy solutions at Shell.
“It is also another example of Shell’s own efforts and commitment to become a net zero-emissions business by 2050.
“Renewable hydrogen will play a pivotal role in the energy system of the future and this project is an important step in helping hydrogen fulfil that potential.”
Shell aims to support the development of a global hydrogen economy by increasing its opportunities to produce, store and deliver hydrogen.
Holland Hydrogen I’s initial construction is an important milestone for this global ambition.
