With less than one week to go until Road User Charging Conference 2021, CiTTi meets speaker Roelof de Graaf, manager of operations at EUCARIS, who will discuss using the European Vehicle and Driving Licence Information System (EUCARIS) for road user charging enforcement.
Taking place on 07-08 September at the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s, Brussels, Road User Charging Conference 2021 provides the latest insight, case studies and debate on current trends and future challenges that affect senior decision makers who have responsibility for intelligent transportation systems and road pricing.
This two-day gathering of leading practitioners welcomes delegates from around the world and across sectors to encourage active discussion and peer-to-peer learning.
Name: Roelof de Graaf
Job role: Manager of operations
Organisation: EUCARIS
What is the best thing about your job?
Meeting people from all over Europe, try to connect them and work towards a result with such a diverse group.
Does legislation help or hinder development in this sector?
Overall we see that good (and mandatory) legislation can help to set priorities and get resources to work on developments. It would be good to have a more strategic approach for setting up new legislation. In the past we see a legislation on very specific points that lacks the overall view. The new mobility strategies of the EC seem to set a good framework for legislative developments but we have to await the real actions in the next years.
What is the biggest challenge facing those with responsibility for implementing road user charging in 2021?
Privacy, fraud and cyber security when automating user charging.
What’s your best piece of advice for those looking to implement road user charging solutions?
Look at alternatives first, user charging is a big job which might cost more than it brings.
How will the business of road user charging have changed by 2030?
Difficult to guess. I think the world will have moved further to “pay per use” of vehicles and road user charging should be part of that.
Why are you looking forward to speaking at Road User Charging Conference 2021?
Meeting people in real live again after one and a half years of lockdowns and restrictions and being able to explain EUCARIS to a new group of users.
At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from Continental, Dublin City Council Smart City Unit, National Road Safety Authority, Viapass… and more! You can view the full agenda here. All times are shown in CEST (GMT+1).
