As the countdown to Road User Charging Conference Americas 2021 continues, CiTTi meets speaker Maureen Bock, chief innovation officer at OReGO.
Taking place on 10-11 March 2021 via Zoom, Road User Charging Conference Americas 2021 will bring together 27 senior-level speakers from Peru, Chile, Brazil, Jamaica, Canada and across the USA to share insight on the latest tolling technologies, road pricing projects and intelligent transport systems being implemented throughout the Americas.
Name: Maureen Bock
Job Role: Chief Innovation Officer
What is the best thing about your job?
The best part of my job is getting to work with a talented team of inquisitive people and leading-edge private sector business partners who understand our use cases.
What is the biggest challenge facing those with responsibility for intelligent transportation systems and tolling/road pricing in 2021?
Designing public systems that leverage technologies the private sector provides so we can meet people’s demands for data security, cybersecurity, and privacy.
What’s your best piece of advice for those looking to implement road-user charging or tolling solutions?
Assemble an advisory committee, develop legislative champions, implement a robust public education and outreach programme, develop a good business case that is compelling, leverage what other states have done, reject proprietary standards and focus on outcomes. Remember to look for opportunities to leverage private sector expertise.
Does legislation help or hinder development in the sector?
It helps, particularly if legislators understand what the programme is trying to achieve. This is one reason to invite them to participate on an advisory committee.
How will the business of road-user charging have changed by 2030?
It will be mandatory for some vehicle classes; the private sector will be more involved; tolling and road-charging services will be offered by multiple entities.
Why are you looking forward to speaking at Road User Charging Conference Americas 2021?
It’s important for people developing ITS for road charging to understand how their solutions can be developed for other purposes beyond providing safer travel. As more connected vehicles are deployed, the user experience will change for all vehicles.
Jurisdictions can build a better, more connected highway for those vehicles, but it will take a lot of money to build in the connectivity those vehicles require – whether that is using cellular, satellite, Wi-Fi or broadband. So finding a funding solution of the future is important to replace or supplement the current funding mechanisms.
At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from LA Metro, Cubic Transportation Systems, Mileage Based User Fee Alliance, the Eastern Transportation Coalition, IBTTA… and more! You can view the full agenda here. All times for Day 1 are shown in PST (GMT-8) and for Day 2 are shown in EST (GMT-5). All sessions will be available after the conference on-demand.
The two-day Road User Charging Conference Americas on 10 and 11 March 2021 is the perfect platform for senior decision-makers who have responsibility for tolling, intelligent transportation systems and road pricing to network and learn from experts in their field.
